OBJECT: Changes in management measures for the Winter flounder fishery

 

Quebec – April 23,2018

 

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Quebec Region informs ground fish fishing licence holders of the Quebec fixed gear fleet of less than 19.81 m of changes to management measures for the Winter flounder fishery effective from 2018.

 

Number of gear allowed

 

The maximum number of nets allowed in the subdivision 4T2a is reduced to 12 for holders of at least one regular snow crab or lobster licence and to 40 for those not holding regular snow crab or lobster licence. In subdivision 4T6 and 4T3a, the maximum number of gillnets is 10.

 

Similarly, the maximum number of lift nets (square nets) allowed in the subdivision 4T2a is reduced to 10 and these can not be used at the same time as gillnets.

 

Mandatory tagging of gillnets

 

All gillnets used for winter flounder fishing must bear a valid annual tag with a unique identification number.

 

Fishers are required to obtain their tags from suppliers approved by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), the list of which is available at the following address: http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/sdc-cps/nir-nei/tags-supplier-region-eng.htm.

 

Soaking time

 

The period of time between the setting and the lifting of each fishing gear must not be greater than 48 hours.

 

Additional management measures

 

With reference to the Notice to fish harvesters issued on March 15, additional management measures to reduce interactions with the North Atlantic Right Whale and to report any interactions with marine mammals are also effectivein all Quebec fisheries.
