Notices to Fish Harvesters

Mackerel Area 16

Quebec City – May 30, 2018

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Quebec Region announces the opening of the mackerel fishery in fishing areas 15 and 16 on June 1st 2018 at 0:01 am, as specified under the Atlantic Fishery Regulations.

Eligible harvesters wishing to participate in this fishery can now obtain their mackerel Conditions of licence through the National Online Licensing System (NOLS). Please recall that licence holders must now comply with the new management measures to protect marine mammals. Licence holders must declare any lost fishing gear to Fisheries and Oceans Canada and provide information related to all interactions with marine mammals that occur during fishing trips. The recording and reporting requirements for these management measures are detailed in the Conditions of licence.

Discussions on the development of a rebuilding plan for mackerel will continue over the next year in collaboration with various stakeholders to identify options to improve the state of the stock, which is currently in the critical zone of the precautionary approach framework.

The total allowable catch of mackerel (TAC) for Eastern Canada has been established at 10,000 tons for 2018.
