SUBJECTS: PRESENCE OF NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE: NOTICE OF FISHERIES CLOSURES

 

Quebec city – June 18nd, 2018

 

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region is providing a notice to announce the delay for the fisheries closure of a fishing area initially planned for the June 19th due to the predicted high winds.

The following grids will be closed: GU36 (portion), GU37 (portion), GT37 (portion).

The closures will take effect on June 21th, 2018 at 15:00 Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Please note that grids GU38 (portion), GU39 (portion), GU40 (portion), GV32, GV33, GV34, GV35, GV36, GV37, GV38, GV39, GV40 (portion), GW32, GW33, GW34, GW35, GW36, GW37, GW38, GW39, GW40, GX32, GX33, GX34, GX35, GX36, GX37 and GX38 also remain closed.

The closures will remain in effect until further notice. In the event that areas are reopened, DFO will inform industry prior to their reopening.

The closures will be in effect for the following fisheries where the fishing seasons are currently opened: snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lobster and whelk, Greenland halibut (fixed gear) and winter flounder (fixed gear). Closures will also be in effect for Atlantic halibut (fixed gear) and mackerel (gillnets) when gears are left unattended.

DFO asks licence holders to be vigilant during fishing activities concerning the presence of North Atlantic Right Whales. Furthermore, please be reminded that it is the responsibility of the licence holder to take into account the marine safety notices issued, amongst others, by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada, as well as the standards and best practices in marine safety, and to take all measures to ensure safe fishing operations.
