SUBJECT: Announcement of the opening of Greenland halibut fishery under competitive regime

 

Quebec July 10, 2018

 

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Quebec region announces the opening of the 4RST Greenland Halibut fishery for the licence holders of the Gaspé fixed gear fleet of less than 13.71 m under competitive regime.

 

The fishery of an allocation of 125.6 t, under a competitive regime with individual maximum catch limit (IMCL), will be authorized from July 12, 2018, 4:30 AM to August 17, 2018, 11:59 PM (EDT).

 

Given the number of fishermen who notified their interest in participating in this fishery, an Individual maximum catch limit catch limit (IMCL) of 12.661 t was established for the fixed gear fleets of the 2018-2019 fishing season management measures.

 

 

Coral and sponge conservation areas

 

Fisheries and Oceans Canada has implemented conservation measures under the Fisheries Act and the Oceans Act to protect the habitats of corals and sponges. The conservation strategy is based on three main objectives: conservation, management and research. No fishing using bottom-contact fishing gear is allowed in the 11 identified conservation areas.

New management measures to document and limit interactions with marine mammals and Closure protocol in case of North Atlantic Right Whale presence

 

With reference to the Notices to Fish Harvesters released March 15 and April 27, 2018, additional management measures to signal and limit interactions with marine mammals, including a closure protocol in case of North Atlantic Right Whale presence are now in force in Quebec fisheries.

 

Other management measures in the Greenland Halibut Conservation Harvesting Plan 4RST 2017-2019, amended on June 14, 2018, remain unchanged in in accordance with the discussions held at the Regional Greenland Halibut Management Committee (RGHMC) in April 2018.
