NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE - NOTICE OF REOPENING OF THE FISHERY IN GRIDS GX36 HA44 HA45 HB43 HB44 HB45 HC43 HC44 AND HC45 - 2018-08-31

Quebec city – August 31,2018

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region is providing a notice to announce the reopening of grids GX36, HA44, HA45 HB43, HB44, HB45, HC43 (portion), HC44 (portion) and HC45 (portion) on August 31, 2018 at 16:00Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Please note that grids GK34 (portion), GK35 (portion), GL34, GL35, GM34 (portion), GM35 (portion), GU36 (portion), GU37 (portion), GU38 (portion), GV36, GV37, GV38, GW36, GW37, GW38, GW39, GW40, GX37 GX38, GX39, GX40, GY42, GY43, GZ42, GZ43, HA42 and HA43 remain closed.

The closures will remain in effect until further notice. In the event that areas are reopened, DFO will inform industry prior to their reopening.

The closures will be in effect for the following fisheries where the fishing seasons are currently opened: snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lobster and whelk, Greenland halibut (fixed gear), cod (fixed gear) and winter flounder (fixed gear). Closures will also be in effect for Atlantic halibut (fixed gear), cod fish (fixed gear), herring (gillnet) and mackerel (gillnet) when gears are left unattended.

DFO asks licence holders to be vigilant during fishing activities concerning the presence of North Atlantic Right Whales. Furthermore, please be reminded that it is the responsibility of the licence holder to take into account the marine safety notices issued, amongst others, by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada, as well as the standards and best practices in marine safety, and to take all measures to ensure safe fishing operations.
