Fishery opening and temporary renewal of the 2017-2019 Conservation Harvesting Plan

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Quebec region announces the opening of the Greenland Halibut fishery for fixed gear fleets under individual transferable quota (ITQ) of Gaspé and Upper and Middle North Shore.

As announced in the May 10thNotice to fish harvesters, the Greenland Halibut interim total allowable catches (TAC) is established at 1,500 t. In accordance with the implementation of quota reconciliation, ITQs will be adjusted, if applicable. Note that carry-forward of the 2018-2019 residual quotas is not authorized.

The fishery will be authorized from May 15th 2019 . Please note that the opening of the competitive fishery will occur only when the official TAC is announced.

Until the announcement of the official TAC and the publication of the 2019-2021 Conservation Harvesting Plan (CHP), the 2017-2019 CHP is renewed. However, please note the following modifications and additions to the previous management measures:

 

·       On March 6, 2019, Fisheries and Oceans Canada created, jointly with the Quebec government, the Banc-des-Américains Marine Protected Area (MPA) in order to the ensure the conservation and protection of this marine ecosystem.

·       Changes have been made to the management measures to minimize the risks of interactions with North Atlantic Right Whales, as well as the requirement to report lost and retrieved gear. Conditions of licence

To obtain their Conditions of licence, fish harvesters must access the National Online Licensing System. For National Online Licensing System assistance, please contact customer support by phone at 1 877‑535-7307 or by email at fishing-peche@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

 

Please note that the Conditions of licence are valid for a 30 days period, considering the interim TAC. Furthermore, fish harvesters who want to obtain Conditions of licence authorizing them to fish Greenland Halibut using a longline will need to make a request.
