PRESENCE OF NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE: NOTICE OF FISHERIES CLOSURES - 2019-07-21

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region is providing a notice of new temporary fisheries closures of fishing areas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence due to the confirmed presence of North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW).

The closure is applied following a grid system (see map below). The following grids will be closed:HA44, HA45, HB43, HB44, HB45, HC43, HC44 and HC45

The closures will take effect on July 23, 2019 at 16:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). All gear must be removed from the closed area before the time of

Please note that grids GK34 (portion), GK35 (portion), GL34, GL35 (portion), GL36 (portion), GM34 (portion), GM35 (portion), GM36 (portion) GS40, GS41, GS42, GT37 (portion), GT40, GT41, GT42, GU36 (portion), GU37 (portion), GU38, GU39 GU40, GU41, GU42, GV36 (portion), GV37, GV38, GV39, GV40, GV41, GV42, GV43 (portion), GV44, GV45, GV46, GW38, GW39, GW40, GW41, GW42, GW43, GW44, GW45 (portion), GW46, GX38, GX39, GX40, GX41, GX42, GX43, GX44, GX47 (portion), GY38, GY39, GY40, GY41, GY42, GY43, GY44, GY45, GY46, GZ38, GZ39, GZ40, GZ42, GZ43, GZ44, HA37, HA38, HA39, HA40, HA41, HA42, HA43, HB35 (portion) and HC35 (portion) remain closed.

The closures will remain in effect until further notice. In the event that areas are reopened, DFO will inform industry prior to their reopening.

The closures will be in effect for the following fisheries where the fishing seasons are currently opened: snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lobster and whelk, Greenland halibut (fixed gear) and winter flounder (fixed gear). Closures will also be in effect for Atlantic halibut (fixed gear) and Mackerel (gillnets) when gears are left unattended.

Furthermore, it is reminded that it is the responsibility of the licence holder to take into account the marine safety notices issued, among others, by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada, as well as the standards and best practices in marine safety, and to take all measures to ensure a safe fishery.
