NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE - NOTICE OF REOPENING OF THE FISHERY IN GRIDS GV42, GW43, GX43 and GY43 2019-07-26

Quebec city – July 26,2019

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region is providing a notice to announce the reopening of grids GV42 (portion), GW43 (portion), GX43 and GY43 on July 26, 2019 at 4:00 p.m  Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

Please note that grids GK34 (portion), GK35 (portion), GL34, GL35 (portion), GL36 (portion), GM34 (portion), GM35 (portion), GM36 (portion) GS40, GS41, GS42, GT37 (portion), GT40, GT41, GT42, GU36 (portion), GU37, GU38, GU39 GU40, GU41, GU42, GV36 (portion), GV37, GV38, GV39, GV40, GV41, GV42 (portion), GV43 (portion), GV44, GV45, GV46, GW38, GW39, GW40, GW41, GW42, GW43 (portion), GW44, GW45 (portion), GW46, GX38, GX39, GX40, GX41, GX42, GX44, GX47 (portion), GY38, GY39, GY40, GY41, GY42, GY44, GY45, GY46, GZ38, GZ39, GZ40, GZ43, GZ44, HA37, HA38, HA39, HA40, HA42, HA43, HA44, HA45, HB35 (portion), HB43, HB44, HB45, HC35 (portion), HC43, HC44 and HC45 remain closed.

As previously announced, grids GK33 (portion), GL33 (portion) and GM33 (portion) will also be closing on July 26, 2019 at 16:00 pm EDT.

The closures will remain in effect until further notice. In the event that areas are reopened, DFO will inform industry prior to their reopening.

The closures will be in effect for the following fisheries where the fishing seasons are currently opened: snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lobster and whelk, Greenland halibut (fixed gear) and winter flounder (fixed gear). Closures will also be in effect for Atlantic halibut (fixed gear), cod fish (fixed gear), herring (gillnet) and mackerel (gillnet) when gears are left unattended.

DFO asks licence holders to be vigilant during fishing activities concerning the presence of North Atlantic Right Whales. Furthermore, please be reminded that it is the responsibility of the licence holder to take into account the marine safety notices issued, amongst others, by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada, as well as the standards and best practices in marine safety, and to take all measures to ensure safe fishing operations.
