PRESENCE OF NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE: NOTICE OF FISHERIES CLOSURES AND REOPENING-2019-08-01

Quebec – August 1, 2019

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region is providing a notice of new temporary fisheries closures of fishing areas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence due to the confirmed presence of North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW).

The closure is applied following a grid system (see map below). The following grid will be closed:GZ40.The closure will take effect on August 4, 2019 at 4:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). All gear must be removed from the closed area before the time of closure.

Grids GL36 and HC35 will openon August 1, 2019 at 4:00 pm EDT.

Please note that grids GK33 (portion), GK34 (portion), GK35 (portion), GL33, GL34, GL35 (portion), GM33 (portion), GM34 (portion), GM35 (portion), GM36 (portion), GT37 (portion), GU37, GU38, GU39 GU40, GU41, GV37, GV38, GV39, GV40, GV41, GV42 (portion), GV43 (portion), GW38, GW39, GW40, GW41, GW42, GW43 (portion), GW44, GW45 (portion), GW46, GX38, GX39, GX40, GX41, GX42, GX44, GX47 (portion), GY38, GY39, GY40, GY41, GY42, GY44, GY45, GY46, GZ38, GZ39, HA37, HA38, HA39, HA40, HA42, HA43, HA44, HA45, HB43, HB44, HB45, HC43, HC44 and HC45 remain closed.

The closures will remain in effect until further notice. In the event that areas are reopened, DFO will inform industry prior to their reopening.

The closures will be in effect for the following fisheries where the fishing seasons are currently opened: snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lobster and whelk, Greenland halibut (fixed gear) and winter flounder (fixed gear). Closures will also be in effect for Atlantic halibut (fixed gear) and Mackerel (gillnets) when gears are left unattended.

Furthermore, it is reminded that it is the responsibility of the licence holder to take into account the marine safety notices issued, among others, by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada, as well as the standards and best practices in marine safety, and to take all measures to ensure a safe fishery.
