PRESENCE OF NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE: NOTICE OF FISHERIES CLOSURES 2019-08-26

Quebec – August 26, 2019

Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Quebec Region is providing a notice of new temporary fisheries closures of fishing areas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence due to the confirmed presence of North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW). 

The closure is applied following a grid system (see map below). The following grids will be closed:HE54, HE55 HE56 (portion), HF54, HF55 (portion), HF56 (portion), HG54 (portion) and HG55 (portion). DFO extends the delay of closure by 24 hours due to the predicted weather conditions and provides a 72 hours advanced notice to licence holder to retrieve gear from the areas that will be closing. The closures will take effect on August 29, 2019 at 16:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). All gear must be removed from the closed area before the time of closure.

As previously announced, grids GW32 (partie), GX31(partie), GX32 (partie), GX33 (partie), GY31 (partie) et GY32 (partie) will be closing on August 26, 2019 at 4:00 pm EDT. 

Please note that grids GK31 (portion), GK32 (portion), GK33 (portion), GK34 (portion), GK35 (portion), GL31, GL32, GL33, GL34, GL35 (portion), GL36 (portion), GM31, GM32, GM33 (portion), GM34 (portion), GM35 (portion), GM36 (portion), GU35 (portion), GU39, GU40, GU41, GV33 (portion), GV34 (portion), GV35 (portion), GV36 (portion), GV37, GV39, GV40, GV41, GW33 (portion), GW34, GW35, GW36 GW38, GW39, GW40, GW41, GW42, GW46, GW47, GW48, GX35 (portion), GX38, GX39, GX40, GX41, GX42, GX46, GX47, GX48, GY38, GY39, GY40, GY41, GY42, GY46, GY48, GZ38, GZ39, GZ40, HA37, HA38 et HA39 remain closed. 

The closures will remain in effect until further notice. In the event that areas are reopened, DFO will inform industry prior to their reopening. 

The closures will be in effect for the following fisheries where the fishing seasons are currently opened: snow crab, toad crab, rock crab, lobster and whelk, Greenland halibut (fixed gear) and winter flounder (fixed gear). Closures will also be in effect for Atlantic halibut (fixed gear), Mackerel (gillnets) and herring (gillnet) when gears are left unattended. 

Furthermore, it is reminded that it is the responsibility of the licence holder to take into account the marine safety notices issued, among others, by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Transport Canada, as well as the standards and best practices in marine safety, and to take all measures to ensure a safe fishery.
