Notices to Fish Harvesters
Greenland Halibut (turbot) - 4RST - Lower North Shore - Zones 4RST (ITQ and outside the program)
MANDATORY USE OF THE VESSEL MONITORING SYSTEM IN 2017
Québec – November 21st, 2016
The department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Quebec Region reminds Quebec Snow Crab licence holders in inshore Areas 12C, 14, 15, 16, 16A and 17 and Quebec and Newfoundland Snow Crab licence holders in inshore Area 13 that they will be required to use the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) starting in 2017. The data transmission frequency will be set at 15 minutes for all inshore Snow Crab Areas.
The department also informs Greenland Halibut licence holders of the Lower North Shoreunder individual transferable quotas (ITQ) that they will also be required to use the VMS starting in 2017. The data transmission frequency will be set at 30 minutes for this fleet.
The mandatory use of the VMS in inshore Snow Crab fisheries and in the Lower North Shore Greenland Halibut fishery is in accordance with the department’s orientation to increase implementation of the VMS in Canadian fisheries. This measure was announced in the inshore Areas Snow Crab Conservation Harvesting Plans in 2016 and is part of the gradual implementation approach for Greenland Halibut licence holders under ITQ announced on April 18th, 2012 in the Notice to Fish Harvester titled Implementation of the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) by Quebec’s Greenland Halibut Fleets.
